In the turbulent years of World War I, New York bartender Hugo Esslin conjured the purple of the twilight sky in a cocktail glass by mixing cherry liqueur, crème de violette and squeezed lemon juice with gin. Today it is still shaken in a shaker and poured into a martini glass and garnished with cocktail cherries.
